What is an online producer?
My title at Beloit Daily News is Online Producer. You may wonder, “what exactly does that mean?” Here is a small part of what an online producer does.
Update websites. Anything that happens on our websites goes through me in some regard. Ads, content, etc.
Brand manager for multiple entities. We currently have 6 different brands at my company, and are in the process of launching the next one - which leads me to…
Marketing. Any marketing done online is created and run by me. People need to find these darn things after all.
Designer. Whether it be ads or sites, if it’s it’s on the web, I likely designed it (our main site excluded).
Evangelist. Someone needs to keep the troops excited about online.
Online editor. Coming up with content for multiple sites usually falls back to me. While our editorial department provides for 1.5 of them, the rest falls to me. Also, I tend to review our articles, as there is the occasional word misspelled or link missed.
Blog and write for the website(s). Well duh.
Technology specialist. Most of the tech question come through one of two people. I’m one.
Programmer. Someone has to figure out the code behind all these darn sites.
Video editor. Probably the most common thought with my title, but I actually spend very little time doing it.
Photographer. Yes, I live by the ‘snap lots and hope some turn out’ theory.
Customer Service. Aren’t we all.
Audio editing. This is a new one, but loving it so far.
Consulting. Keeping up on all the web trends for media and advising on best practices.
Social Media expert. Twitter and Facebook are part of my job. Gotta love that.
Keep in mind, I am at a small daily and this likely varies from paper to paper, but this is who I am and what I do. Also, I am most certainly forgetting some aspects of my job - these are just the ones that pop into my head at the moment.
You can see why I love my job.
